Scrum Training for Cybersecurity Teams at Absolute Software Vietnam

Axon Active delivered hands-on, in-house Scrum and Agile training for the development teams at Absolute Software’s Ho Chi Minh City center, Vietnam, building sprint discipline, team ceremonies, and agile engineering practices. Aligned with Scrum Alliance learning objectives, the program used the Training from the Back of the Room method to help engineers learn by doing.

About the client

Who is Absolute Software?

Absolute Software is a cybersecurity company and a pioneer of endpoint resilience: its firmware-embedded technology gives organizations the visibility and control to protect, track, and recover their devices, on or off the network. Its Ho Chi Minh City development center owned multiple product portfolios across Absolute’s commercial and consumer lines — at its peak around 50 engineers across seven Scrum teams — shipping regular production releases in a security-critical domain where quality and a predictable cadence matter as much as raw throughput.

What we did

Embedding agile ways of working

The goal was durable change in how the teams work day to day, not certificate-collecting. Across the sessions, the engineers built the muscle memory of a healthy Scrum team: clear sprint goals, focused planning, reviews that surface real feedback, and retrospectives that lead to change. Special attention went to the engineering practices that keep a cybersecurity product shippable — a meaningful definition of done and the disciplines that hold technical debt down. Participants who met the conditions earned a Fit for Scrum certificate.

The impact compounded over time. The Vietnam teams became the organization’s first lasting Scrum adoption, with clear gains in productivity and software quality — enough that the company expanded its commitment to its Vietnam delivery on the strength of the result. A later in-house refresher brought the now-larger group — by then around 50 people across an outsourced and an offshore team — back up to speed and onboarded new joiners. By that point the center was shipping consumer releases to production monthly and commercial releases quarterly: the steady, predictable cadence the training set out to build.

How do you teach Scrum to engineers who’ve never used it?

By making them do it, not watch it. The sessions are built on short bursts of input followed by immediate practice, frequent movement, and learners teaching learners. People leave having run a sprint planning, a review, and a retrospective, and resolved a simulated impediment — which sticks far better than a slide-led course. Two exercises landed especially well: an 80-quality-steps exercise and Lego Serious Play, both of which turn abstract Scrum ideas into something tangible.

How do you teach Scrum to engineers who’ve never used it?

Why in-house, and why face-to-face?

Holding the training on the company’s own teams, in one room, builds a shared language fast and lets people apply what they learn directly to their real work the next day. For non-native English speakers especially, the games and real-world exercises carry the ideas across better than theory.

Why in-house, and why face-to-face?
How we work together

A hands-on, in-house program

The training ran offline, face-to-face, by design. The Training from the Back of the Room approach is built on movement, conversation, and repeated practice, and works best in a room where people pair up, work at flip charts, and run live Scrum simulations together. Rather than lecturing the framework, the sessions put participants into the work — planning, reviewing, retrospecting — and let the principles surface from the experience. The curriculum spine mirrored the Certified ScrumMaster (CSM) learning objectives from Scrum Alliance.
